Approach

A plain way of working

No homework you cannot start, no pages of worksheets, no surprises in the room.

Each session follows a short agenda we write together in the first few minutes. We pick one thing to try before next time, small enough to start on a bad day, and we look at how it went instead of how it should have gone.

The methods are cognitive behavioral and acceptance-based. In practice that means breaking a task into steps, setting up cues you will actually see, and noticing the story you tell yourself when something slips.

Lumen is therapy. It is not an ADHD evaluation, it is not coaching and it does not prescribe medication. Andre says so plainly, and says when another kind of help would suit you better.

How it works

From first message to first session

Four steps. You can stop after any of them.

  1. 01

Write, or ask for a fit call

Use the form or send a text. A fit call is 15 minutes, by phone or video, and it is not therapy.

  2. 02

    Get the plan in writing

Session length, your fee and the good faith estimate arrive by email before you book.

  3. 03

    Meet for 50 minutes

In the Provo office or by video. You get the agenda a day ahead, so nothing is a surprise.

  4. 04

Leave with one thing to try

A small step, written down, and a reminder by text or email if you want one.

Andre Merriweather

Licensed clinical social worker, founder of Lumen

Andre sees adults with ADHD, in Provo and by video.

Andre started Lumen for adults with ADHD who are tired of advice written for someone else's brain. He keeps sessions structured and kind: an agenda, one thing to try, and room to say when it did not work.

He does therapy, not evaluations, and he will tell you when an evaluation or a prescriber is the better next step.

How fees work

What most people ask before a first session, answered without a number.

  • Insurance we work with

Lumen is out of network with insurance plans, so you pay for each session yourself. Lumen does not take Medicare or Medicaid. If you would rather see someone who bills your plan, Andre will give you the names of colleagues who do.

    • Out of network with insurance plans

    • No Medicare or Medicaid

  • If you pay yourself

The fee depends on the length of the session, and sessions are 50 minutes. Your fee is given in writing before you start, and it changes only if you agree to the change in writing. A limited number of reduced-fee spots may be open: ask by message. HSA and FSA cards work like any other card. If you need to move an appointment, please tell us 24 hours ahead; a text is enough.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

At the end of each month Andre can email an itemized receipt, called a superbill, that you send to your plan to ask for reimbursement. It lists a diagnosis code that your insurer can see. Your plan decides what it pays, and reimbursement is not guaranteed, so ask your plan before you start.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a good faith estimate in writing of what your care will cost before it starts. Lumen sends yours before the first session. If a bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

  • Checking your benefits

Lumen does not bill your plan, so there is no benefits check on our side. To learn whether your plan reimburses out-of-network therapy, ask it in writing before the first session; most plans answer in a member portal or a secure message.

Questions

Questions people ask first

Do you diagnose ADHD?

No. Lumen offers therapy, not testing or evaluation. If you want an evaluation, Andre can give you the names of clinicians who do them. You do not need a diagnosis to start.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. Andre is a therapist, not a prescriber. If you take medication or want to talk about it, he works alongside your prescriber with your permission.

Do I have to make a phone call to begin?

No. You can use the form, send a text or write an email. We reply in writing, and we call only if you ask us to.

Do you take my insurance?

Lumen is out of network with insurance plans, and does not take Medicare or Medicaid. The fees page explains how paying yourself works and how to ask your plan about reimbursement.

What happens in the first session?

It lasts 50 minutes. Andre explains how he works, the limits of confidentiality and the possible risks and benefits of therapy, then follows the agenda. At the end you both decide whether to continue.

What do I do in a crisis?

Call or text 988, any time, or call 911 in an emergency. Our messages are not monitored around the clock, so please do not wait for us to answer.
